Do you or someone you know have a “gummy” smile? When they smile, does their upper gum tissues show excessively? It may even look like they have short teeth. This is caused by a variety of things, including bone structure, overgrowth of the gums, or genetically short or worn teeth.
Extreme cases require upper jaw surgery in order to reposition the entire upper jaw higher up, thereby tucking it more under the upper lip. However, most cases can be helped with orthodontics, re-contouring of the gums with a laser or other means, or a combination of these with or without porcelain laminates. Every case is different, of course, and different solutions should be evaluated.
Any dentist who performs these procedures can show you before and after pictures. If you or a loved one would like to discuss the options for handling a gummy smile, please do not hesitate to call us for a complimentary consultation.
